The PetSafe Electronic Smart Door is an electronic pet door that can be installed through doors or walls. The door is unlocked as a dog approaches that is wearing an RFID collar tag. The controlled access works in both directions, inward and outward. This makes the door a great option for customers who want to allow access outside for their dog while keeping cats indoors.
The PetSafe Electronic door can work with up to 5 dogs. Each collar tag is programmed to the Smart Door. These tags have an activation range of up to 3ft. The frame of the door is a molded plastic and the flap is constructed of Plexiglas. Collar tags have a housing that includes a battery. These batteries on average will last up to 6 months, depending on frequency of use. Collar tags are replaceable. Some customers find they can replace the battery portion at local Battery Plus outlets for a cheaper overall cost.
The unlocking action is rather unique with the PetSafe Smart Door. Once activated by the collar tag, the swing door will raise upward...unseating itself from a ridge. The allows the dog to push through the opening. Magnets in the swing door allow it to center on the pet door, and then the door will lower onto the ridge...thus locking into place. Nuisance animals would be unable to lift the swing door open so therefore this electronic door is considered to be raccoon proof.
Note: Not recommended for cats. The collar tag is too large and the flap has weight that might deter a cat from using.
